My Desire by Kirk Franklin featuring Fred Hammond March 31, 2009

Kirk Franklin. He can sing, but he’s not a singer. He can direct a choir, but he’s far too flamboyant to stick to leading a choir. He can play the piano, but he’d evidently rather leave that to someone else unless the occasion calls for him to tinkle the old ivories. So where does that leave him? Like an imp bouncing around a track with verbal jibs and jabs. In a lot of ways he’s like Andrae Crouch only realising that he’s not the singer in the gig and so leaving it to the experts … but not leaving out his own imprint. Of course what marks him out is the fact that he writes and produces a great deal of the material that has sent gospel music to a whole new plain since his arrival on the scene now (whisper it) almost 20 years ago. I hugely admire his achievements in the industry and there’s no doubting the man’s quality when it comes to putting these things.
Yet I cannot help but feel for people like Fred Hammond who was part of the fabric for a bit longer and looked to bust open the doors with Commissioned and then RFC, but KF just slaps on his Stomp and goes into orbit. This is what should make gospel music different to secular music in the sense that the industry should be about giving God glory for however His message gets across and so supporting the young whipper-snapper who pops in even if he goes further than you who has been in the industry longer. To the credit of Fred and Kirk, this on the surface appears to have been the case and it’s not as though Fred’s career has fizzled into obscurity. On the contrary it appears as if he’s beginning to reap some of the benefits of his hard efforts with his diversification into other media beyond the confines of gospel music.
I remember coming across this song and listening to some brothers having fun with the song. The bass track obviously had to mean something if Freddie’s a part of the business and the lyrical content also hits a home run with what should be the bottom line about all life – a desire for God and God alone. Great track by two superbly gifted ministers of the mystery of the gospel. Enjoy.

By the time I came across this album for the first time I was hooked on anything with JPK’s name on it. This song was of interest because it is like a three course meal – the opening part moving onto a middle bit that’s different to what you initially heard then ending up with something completely different yet attached to the track, almost as if the brother wanted to bring various strands of ideas he had of a song and was able to sew them together. It’s not seamless, but it is a wonderful piece of choral celebration to the return of our Lord and Saviour any day.
You know a song’s decent when your choir tries it out and the choir to which I belonged for a while tried it out. Some things though are better left to the experts and although the choir to which I belonged was good for whatever reason we were not quite able to do justice to this track. That was a pity because this is such a beautiful track to get into. Enjoy.

I enjoy writing and also love reading good writing online. Randy Alcorn runs a ministry called Eternal Perspectives which you can find here. He is a really engrossing writer and when he writes passionately on his heart subjects you don’t ignore him whether or not you agree with him. I thought it would be worthwhile just digging up some articles that outline some of the work that I particularly found inspiring.
This is a brilliant post on spiritual heroes and should motivate us to do something similar in recording who’s been influential in my own spiritual development and how. This is echoed by the format of the Blair biography that I’m reading where significant chronological events are interspersed with character profiles of those who had an impact on the brother around the time.
Here’s a beautiful introduction on what EPM is all about and in this entry time he makes a reference to his mate’s health situation in a way that highlights the standard of writing to which bloggers can aspire. Good stuff.
I highly recommend his work and if at all possible check his stuff out as it comes out and be prepared to be encouraged and challenged on what stand we can make as believers in an ever increasingly challenging world situation.
For His Name’s Sake
Shalom.

So this is the first in the series on the Missing Jesus. Useful tool to use in helping us understand that in as much as we can relate to Jesus because he was a human just like us, it is not to say He’s an identikit human to fit all purposes and none. Let that start a conversation among your peers! Enjoy.

Told you the stuff of CCC is worth checking, here’s some more amterial that would undoubtedly be used to support the ongoing series they would have in one of their teachings. What’s good about these videos is that they show what can be accomplished when you allow creative talents to blossom with the equipment to produce quality thought provoking material for the church local and international. Look out for the first in this series in a post near you soon. Enjoy.
